Limerick's Day

May,12 is a Limerick Day, this kind of poetry may be used as pronunciation drill or even to introduce the culture of the English – speaking world.

Here are some examples of the limericks:

There was a young person of Ayr,
Whose head was remarkably square:
On the top, in fine weather,
She wore a gold feather;
Which dazzled the people of Ayr.

There was an Old Man with a beard,
Who said, 'It is just as I feared!
Two Owls and a Hen,
Four Larks and a Wren,
Have all built their nests in my beard!'

                                                            How to write a limerick

Rhyme Pattern: The last words of the first, second, and fifth lines all rhyme with each other. We’ll call those rhyming words “A,” however the words could be “ Peru,” “shoe,” and “true” as illustrated in the first poem below or “Tim,” “swim,” and “him” as illustrated in the second poem below. And the last words of the third and fourth lines rhyme with each other. We’ll call those rhyming words “B,” however the words could be “night” and “fright” in the first example or “dock” and “rock” in the second example.

A Clumsy Young Fellow Named Tim
1. There once was a fellow named Tim (A)
2. whose dad never taught him to swim. (A)
3. He fell off a dock (B)
4. and sunk like a rock. ( B)
5. And that was the end of him. (A)

Happy limericking!

Limerick, a popular form of short, humorous verse, often nonsensical and frequently obscene. It consists of five lines, rhyming aabba, and the dominant metre is anapestic, with two feet in the third and fourth lines and three feet in the others. The origin of the limerick is unknown, but it has been suggested that the name derives from the chorus of an 18th-century Irish soldiers’ song,“Will You Come Up to Limerick?”

The first collections of limericks in English date from about 1820.

Edward Lear, who composed and illustrated those in his Book of Nonsense (1846), claimed to have gotten the idea from a nursery rhyme beginning “There was an old man of Tobago.” A typical example from Lear’s collection is this verse:

There was an Old Man who supposed
That the street door was partially closed;
But some very large rats
Ate his coats and his hats,
While that futile Old Gentleman dozed.

The form acquired widespread popularity in the early years of the 20th century, and limerick contests were often held by magazines and business houses. The true limerick addict, however, turned to more complicated verse, such as this anonymous tongue twister:

A tutor who taught on the flute
Tried to teach two tooters to toot.

Said the two to the tutor,
“Is it harder to toot, or
To tutor two tooters to toot?”

Carolyn Wells

There once was a boy in Quebec,
Who was buried in snow to his neck.
When asked, “Are you friz?”
He replied, “Tes, I is.
But we don’t call this cold in Quebec.”
